Developed by H&H Wellness — a sibling-founded femtech company — HairHelper is a patent-pending adaptive hair tie that functions as a hybrid between a scrunchie and a headband. Instead of requiring the wearer to reach overhead and loop a tie through their hair multiple times, HairHelper slides on over the head like a headband, is moved to the crown, and secured with a single press-and-pull motion. The Problem with Traditional Hair Ties
Standard hair ties — elastics, scrunchies, claw clips — all share a fundamental design assumption: that the user can lift both arms above their head with a full range of motion. For approximately 2–5% of adults with frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) — a condition that disproportionately affects women between 40 and 60 — that assumption is wrong.
Women with frozen shoulder, stroke-related hemiplegia, post-surgical shoulder restrictions, or cervical spinal cord injuries often report that hair care is one of the first and most emotionally difficult activities they lose the ability to do independently. It is intimate, visible, and daily. And until now, there has been no product specifically designed to address it.
How HairHelper Works
The mechanism behind HairHelper is elegantly simple:
- Step 1 — Slip on: Place HairHelper over the head like a headband, at face level. No arm elevation required at this stage.
- Step 2 — Slide to crown: Using natural neck tilt and minimal arm movement, guide HairHelper to the crown of the head. The flexible band collects hair as it moves.
- Step 3 — Tighten: Press the clasp and pull the cords to secure. Hair is held in place at the crown without any overhead reaching.
- To release: Press the clasp and pull gently. HairHelper loosens and slides off.
The entire process is designed to require no overhead arm movement — eliminating the motion that is most painful or impossible for women with shoulder limitations. It is also engineered to be as one-handed as possible, making it usable for women with stroke-related upper limb weakness.
