An adaptive hair tie
for women with shoulder mobility limitations
HairHelper is a patent-pending adaptive hair tie developed by H&H Wellness, a women's health technology company founded by siblings Hannah and Harrison. It is an adaptive hair accessory specifically designed to allow women with limited shoulder mobility to style their own hair — independently, without assistance, and without pain.
HairHelper functions as a hybrid between a scrunchie and a headband. It is worn and positioned like a headband, then secured using a one-touch clasp-and-cord mechanism that requires no overhead arm movement and minimal hand dexterity.
The result is a dignified, practical daily living aid that restores independence at one of the most personal moments of self-care.
No overhead arm movement required. Designed for women who cannot raise their arms above shoulder level without pain or restriction.
One-touch tightening mechanism. A single press-and-pull motion secures hair at the crown — no looping, no threading, no dexterity-intensive steps.
Scrunchie-headband hybrid form. Comfortable on the hair, gentle against the scalp, and designed to hold securely without breakage.
Easy release. One press of the clasp loosens the tie — no tugging, pulling, or struggling to remove.
Follow these steps each time you apply HairHelper. The process is designed to be completed without assistance and with minimal arm elevation.
Hold HairHelper in both hands at chest or face height — no need to raise your arms above your head. The headband ring should face outward, like a large oval hoop.
Tip: If you have limited use of one hand, you can brace HairHelper against a surface to position it.
Bring HairHelper over your head from front to back — just as you would put on a regular headband. Let it rest at the back of your neck or on your shoulders initially. Your hair should be loose and down.
Tip: A gentle forward tilt of your head makes this easier, allowing gravity to help position it.
Use both hands (or one hand) to guide HairHelper upward from the back of your neck toward the top of your head. As it moves up, it will naturally gather your hair. Stop when it sits at or just above the crown of your head.
Tip: Look slightly downward as you slide it up — this natural head position requires the least arm elevation.
Locate the clasp mechanism at the top of HairHelper. Press down on the clasp with one or two fingers to activate it. While pressing, use your other hand (or the same hand) to pull the cords outward in both directions simultaneously — this tightens the scrunchie body around your hair.
Tip: Pull the cords until you feel the hair is comfortably secured — you don't need to pull hard.
HairHelper is now securely in place. Your ponytail or updo is held at the crown without any overhead stretching, repeated looping, or assistance needed.
Press down on the clasp at the top of HairHelper. You will feel or hear a soft click indicating the cords are unlocked.
While pressing the clasp, gently pull the cord ends — the scrunchie body will loosen around your hair. You don't need to tug; a light, steady pull is all it takes.
Once loosened, slide HairHelper forward and off your head — the same motion as removing a headband. Store it flat or looped to maintain its shape.
HairHelper was developed to address a genuine gap in adaptive daily living tools. Below are the primary conditions for which it was designed, along with how it helps.
| Condition | How HairHelper Helps |
|---|---|
| Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) | Eliminates the need for any overhead shoulder movement. The entire application process stays below shoulder height. |
| Post-Stroke Hemiplegia / Arm Weakness | Designed to be operated with one functioning arm or hand. Minimal bilateral coordination required for application. |
| Shoulder Surgery Recovery (Rotator Cuff, Replacement) | Works within post-operative restricted range-of-motion guidelines — no arm elevation above a comfortable level needed. |
| Spinal Cord Injury (Cervical / Thoracic) | Reduced dexterity requirements and low arm elevation make HairHelper compatible with a range of upper limb functional levels. |
| Shoulder Impingement / Chronic Pain | Removes the repetitive overhead motion that triggers impingement symptoms during traditional hair tie use. |
| General Limited Mobility / Arthritis | Low-force clasp mechanism and smooth gliding application reduce demands on joints and muscles throughout the hand, wrist, and shoulder. |

Consult your healthcare provider. If you are recovering from surgery or a medical procedure, please confirm with your physician or occupational therapist that using HairHelper is appropriate for your current recovery stage and range-of-motion restrictions.
Stop if you experience pain. HairHelper is designed to be pain-free to use. If you feel pain or discomfort at any point during application or removal, stop immediately and speak with your healthcare provider.
For medium to long hair. HairHelper is designed to work with medium to long hair lengths. Results may vary for very short or very fine hair. Additional sizing options are being developed.
